Style Icon: Lily James

You might know her as Cinderella, but to those who have been watching Downton Abbey she will always be Rose. Her recent press tour for the Disney classic certainly brought my attention to her style. As you know, I am a sucker for a princess dress and boy has she brought it on in that department!

She always looks elegant, whether in it is for a red carpet appearance or a red-eye. She manages to effortlessly go from short and sweet (blue and white Valentino) to suggary sweet pink Elie Saab. She also seems to stick to the two most princess worthy designers out there, Valentino and Elie Saab for her red carpet appearances. And who can blame her? She stunned in red lace Valentino way before her princess days. Asides from the simple princess dresses, she also manages to pull off more edgy looks like enhanced silhouettes and dramatic feathers.

I don’t know what I am looking more forward to- the final season of Downton or more of Lily’s style?

st exclusively Elie Saab and Valentino, the two most princess-worthy designers, on the red carpet she keeps her looks sweet in either soft colours or with her feminine styling. Even when she puts the dresses aside for a long-haul flight, she manages to look put-together and sleek.

Best Dressed: Oscars 2015

oscarstext

Last night was the Oscars (yup it is already that time of the year) and damn did it present some of the best looking dresses along with some of the most talented actresses and actors of course. I think this could be officially called the year of the sleek dress. With nary a fairytale dress in sight (bar JLo off-course), 2015 saw most actresses reaching for the fitted or sheath dress. And it really worked!

My favourite was also the biggest surprise of the night – Rita Ora in Marchesa. She managed the perfect balance between dramatic and glamorous. Everything from the fit (nothing overtly sexy) to the accessories and beauty look was perfection. I think this is the first time I’ve chosen a mermaid look over the ball gown!

Black and white was clearly also a theme of the night with many of my favourite dresses falling into this category. Jenna Tatum deserves special mention however as she turned what was just another boring white dress (with a cape) into something awesome! Another triumph of accessories (that belt) and beautiful draping.

Jennifer Lopez’s dreamy Elie Saab dress was everything I dream of, but I felt like her cleavage sort of distracts from the overall prettiness of the dress. Love her lip colour though!

In the final two spots are America Ferreira and Emma Stone, both in different shades of green surprisingly! I only wish Emma’s was closer in tone to America’s dress.

2015 Golden Globes: Best Dressed

I rarely watch award shows nowadays but I still love having a look at what everyone was wearing. This time around it was no disappointment. Silver was the clear winner! Take a look at a few of my favourite picks from ethereal and dreamy to damn right sassy (that is you Emma Stone!). Which were your favourite looks of the night?

Best Dressed: Emmys 2014

Emmys2014

I almost can’t believe that it was already a year ago that I did my last Emmy’s roundup – well almost, as this year’s ceremony was held a month earlier than usual. Some of my favourite actors and actresses were in attendance, amongst them Mindy Kahling (The Mindy Project), Claire Danes (Homeland) and Zooey Deschanel (New Girl). Rounding up the best dressed of the evening (in my humble opinion) wasn’t easy as I don’t think there is one look that truly stood out, but nevertheless here goes!

1. Allison Williams in Giambattista Valli Couture

I love a good princess moment, so this was surprisingly easy to decide on. I love how unexpected the punch of yellow is and obviously the cutesy bow detail. Keeping her accessories minimal was a good call, I just think a brighter lip would have been even prettier.

2. Lizzy Caplan in Donna Karan Atelier

I love this modern equivalent of Julia Robert’s iconic Valentino monochrome look. It struck the perfect balance between opulence and minimalism. The deep side part was pure genius on Lizzy’s part!

3. Julliane Hough in DSquared

All white can easily look bridal, but this elegant and simple look keeps it looking sleek along with Juliane’s laid back style and attitude. White and a great tan is unbeatable.

4. Heidi Klum in Zac Posen

She rarely dresses age appropriate, but this goes to show what is a great colour and good fit can do for you. The dress really makes the best of her figure without looking too garish or sexy. I wish she’d dress like this more often.

5. Kaley Cuoco in Monique Lhullier

Come on, tulle, a-line and my favourite colour combination (pink&red) all in one? Love! Kaley’s new edgier hairstyle adds some edge to an expected look for her and I love it.

6. Behati Prinsloo in Prada

I love how this Prada dress reminds me of my dancing days yet is elegant and understated. The sweeping train adds just the right amount of drama to this low-key look. Best pony of evening as well!

7. Julia Roberts in Elie Saab

Breaking all the ‘age-appropriate’ rules is Julia Roberts in a low-cut mini. On book it doesn’t sound like something I’d like, but on her it just looks amazing. The large embellishments make it more playful than sexy and the hemline hits just on the sweet spot.

8.  Michelle Monaghan in Giambattista Valli Couture

Another beauty in white! It is very evident that red and white were the dominant colours of the evening. I’d like to start off with a note on how beautiful her hair was styled and finish by saying that her minimalist approach beats the runway cape look by miles! White and gold is always a winner, even if you don’t get to deliver your speech!

9. Halle Berry in Elie Saab

Another actress who usually treads the line between sexy and inappropriate. This look is firmly on the sexy side with the perfect slit and a modern grecian-goddess look.

10. Julie Bowen in Peter Som

I wouldn’t say this look is exactly the most memorable, but I felt it deserved a spot as Julie looked very pretty. The soft side-swept waves do it for her! I also like the halterneck and pleated skirt combination to make the best of her svelte frame. Add to that a fun print and I’m sold!

10 Best Dressed: Golden Globes 2014

Golden Globes 2014 best dressed

Its awards season! And whilst I am not a red carpet critic, I think there is nothing wrong with celebrating my favourite dressed stars.

  1. Cate Blanchette in Armani Prive: I think this is the dress that we will all remember in years to come. Classically elegant, simply pretty and the styling is spot on. It also doesn’t hurt that Cate Blanchette is extremely beautiful.
  2. Michelle Dockery in Oscar de la Renta: Michelle’s dress is fit for a a modern princess. The red lip is the perfect accompaniment!
  3. Greta Gerwig in Donna Karen Atelier: I couldn’t find a larger image of her dress, but isn’t it just amazing? Tea length? Check! Beaded? Check! Princess style? Check! Pleated? Check! Love this dress!
  4. Louise Roe in Monique Lhullier: Monique Lhullier is one of my favourite designers. The glitter clutch perfectly complements this colourful lace dress.
  5. Monica Potter in Romona Kevaza: The only thing that could have made this look better would have been a bright lip. Gold and black is such a classic pretty combination.
  6. Maria Monounos in Max Azria: Maria was colourful, pretty and sexy in this fuschia dress with sheer insets. I love that she off-played the sexiness of the dress with the simple pony.
  7. Lupita Nyong’O in Ralph Lauren: This is reminiscent of Gwyneth Paltrow’s Tom Ford Oscars Dress, just in a much better colour. I think this signals great things to come!
  8. Zoe Saldana in Prabal Gurung: This look has been met with much criticism, but I think that if there is ever someone to make such a fashion-forward look work, its Zoe. I love how what might seem incredibly over-the-top translates into such a simple look.
  9. Drew Barrymore in Marchesa: This is how good pregnancy can look! She looks beautiful and happy and the colours are amazing. As a side note, pregnant Olivia Wilde also looked pretty good.
  10. Julianna Margulies in Andrew Gn: This is how older women should dress- sexy, classy and never too young! I love the fern detailing on the dress as it adds to what might have been a slightly boring dress. She also accessorized it perfectly!

Other favourite looks of mine include Emma Watson in daring Dior, Emma Roberts in Lanvin (eventhough I hate a fishtail) and Mila Kunis in Gucci Premier. Which were your favourite of the night? Are you planning to see any of the winning movies?
